Analysis - Ledes

In the CNN report titled "Trump administration moves to ban flavored e-cigarettes," the authors of the article use a succinct but descriptive lede to summarize the main points of the story.

This story, like many others, is fairly complicated in that the action it describes (the banning of flavored vape products) is far from being as simple as a straight line from points a to b. Therefore, the lede of the article quickly captures a more specific description of the administration's announcement. The lede reads: "President Donald Trump said Wednesday that the Food and Drug Administration would be putting out "some very strong recommendations" regarding the use of flavored e-cigarettes in "a couple of weeks."

The lede effectively summarizes the who, what, when, and how aspects of the story in a simple yet descriptive sentence. The lede expands on the very simplistic descriptions of the who, what, and how from the headline by stating that the Food and Drug administration will be issuing recommendations on the use of the substances. The lede also specifies a window of time for which these actions will take place by noting that the president noted the announcements would be made within a couple of weeks.

The lede expands on the rudimentary headline, but still only provides relatively general information compared to the rest of the article. The precise details and timeline of the administration's plans, as well as the entire why aspect of the story are not detailed until later in the piece.
