Chicago Cubs President Theo Epstein announced Sunday that the team would not renew the contract of manager Joe Maddon following the club's failure to secure a playoff berth for the first time since 2014.

Maddon, 65, was in charge for the team's historic title run in 2016, the Cubs' first championship in 108 years, but just three years later both manager and organization feel it is time for a change.

"We both agreed that it's time and that this type of change is a win-win," said Epstein in a joint press conference with Maddon on Sunday, according to the New York Times. "There's going to be a bidding war for his services, and there should be. He's in a great position."

Maddon will have no shortage of suitors for his services next season, as Kansas City, San Francisco, Pittsburgh, and San Diego all have openings, and other clubs could decide to make changes as the offseason nears.

"I think I still have a good three to five [years] in me," said Maddon, according to the Washington Post.

It is not yet known who the Cubs will name as Maddon's replacement.
