A police officer shot and killed a man in St. Paul's Midway neighborhood after the man rammed a squad car with his own vehicle, according to a report from the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

Police said that the incident occurred near the intersection of Thomas Avenue West and North Griggs Street on Sunday night. The suspect hit the officer's vehicle with his own car, and exited brandishing a knife, which he refused to put down, according to local CBS outlet WCCO 4.

According to the Star Tribune, St. Paul Police Chief Todd Axtell last week referred to "a stretch of unprecedented violence" in the city. The department has mobilized all units and has increased street patrols.

Sunday's incident marks the 189th officer involved shooting in Minnesota since the year 2000, and the fourth this summer alone, according to the report from the Star Tribune.
