Analysis - Breaking news

By Zach Batia

Perhaps the most important ongoing story in past weeks has been the Impeachment proceedings against President Trump. I looked at the New York Times' continually updated article AP FACT CHECK: Trump's Tale About Romney Unrest, Impeachment, to examine how the story was updated.

The primary section of this article is the one which gets updated when new news is added. In the case of this article, updates are made whenever Trump says something to media or on twitter which is either partially or wholly untrue. The statement in question, followed by the author's analysis, is tacked on to the growing list of such entries that follows the updated review section.

The key segment of this article in terms of the breaking news function is thus the aforementioned introductory section. This is comprised of several paragraphs which break down the general timeline of the impeachment proceedings thus far, including the most recent events as well as relating current proceedings to the Mueller Russia investigation of last year. This section gets updated as different quotes from the president come out and new events in the impeachment case take place.

In this case twitter is a landmine of reactions to everything the president says. Massive threads of arguments and hateful messages can be found under any tweet relating to the president or the impeachment proceedings. The divisiveness of the Trump administration is blatantly apparent on social media, never more so than during this time of open conflict between the president and congress.
