Analysis - Digital journalism

For an article which uses multiple mediums to tell its story, I decided to go back to Miguel Otarola's piece on the Minnehaha Academy gas explosion. This story utilizes both a written story and four minute video to tell the tale of the local school which had been decimated by a gas leak explosion.
This is a perfect piece to analyze for this assignment because this story is one which requires both text to tell the details of the story itself, and a video to convey the emotions of the people involved in such a traumatic event.
The text portion of the story is fairly comprehensive in that it encapsulates the events of the explosion itself. Beginning with the point of view of a student in the building at the time, before detailing recovery efforts and perspectives from firefighters and other rescuers, and then finally touching on the reactions from staff and students, the article pieces together a 360 degree view of the tragedy and in itself could carry the story. However, what the text can't fully capture is the emotion of the community members dealing with the loss of their school and two staff members. The video aspect is almost entirely composed of interviews with various individuals with ties to the school and the rescue effort. The video captures all that the text cannot, the facial expressions, breaking voices, and sadness that each person's words carry. Pieced together, the text and the video create a complete, in depth capture of the event which conveys both information and emotion.
