Local news - Anti-immigrant rhetoric dominates Minneapolis Trump rally
By Zach Batia
President Donald Trump invoked more of his patented xenophobia and anti-immigrant rhetoric at a rally in Minneapolis Thursday evening.
"For many years, leaders in Washington brought large numbers of refugees to your state from Somalia without considering the impact on schools and communities and taxpayer," said Trump.
About 23,000 Somali immigrants live in the state, most of whom are employed. Minnesota's unemployment rate sits at only 3.3%, below the national average, according to the Washington Post.
Trump also referred to Minnesota congresswoman Ilhan Omar, who is of Somali descent, as a "disgrace to our country."
State Republicans attempted to justify the President's words on Friday. "He is not against immigrants, he is not against refugees coming into this country," said state GOP chairwoman Jennifer Carnahan, according to the Star Tribune. "He is just simply saying that he understands there are some challenges."
