ISIS leader Abu Bakr al Baghdadi died at age 48 this weekend during a raid by US forces in northern Syria, according to President Trump.

The terrorist mogul, responsible for the emergence of the Islamic State into a global terrorism network, detonated a suicide vest during the raid, conducted by US special forces, according to the New York Times.

Baghdadi's location was surprising, as the region of Syria he was found in is dominated by an affiliate of rival terrorist group Al Qaeda, according to the Atlantic.

Baghdadi's death has not yet been confirmed by ISIS, but the group is often quicker to claim attacks than it is to acknowledge deaths of its leaders.
