National news - US health officials announce breakthrough in vaping investigations
By Zach Batia
Centers for Disease Control's principal deputy director Anne Schuchat announced that health officials have narrowed in on Vitamin E acetate as a "potential toxin of concern" in investigations into the widespread outbreak of vaping related deaths and illnesses.
This is the first time officials have found a common suspect in damaged lungs of patients, according to CBS.
The substance was detected in all 29 lung tissue samples from victims that officials had tested, according to Schuchat, who spoke to reporters on a conference call Friday. TCH was found in 23 of the samples, while nicotine was present in 16.
A recent outbreak of vaping related illnesses and deaths in the US has claimed at least 39 lives, according to CNBC.
"We have a potential toxin of concern from biological samples in patients," Schuchat said. "We are in a better place than we were a few weeks ago in terms of finding a culprit."
